October 14, 2013 BOE Meeting

The Nemaha Central Board of Education narrowed the mascot options from five to three at the regular meeting on October 14.  The five final suggestions submitted by the mascot selection committee were: Titans, Jaguars, Outlaws, Storm and Thunder. Following discussion, the board voted that the three options to be voted upon by students would be the Titans, Jaguars and Thunder. Supt. Kohlman said that students will be voting on Wednesday morning, October 16.

The board members also approved a counter-offer to Highland Community College of $400,000 for the Baileyville main building, shop building and parking lot.  The original asking price was $500,000 to which Highland officials countered with $300,000. Highland President David Reist, had expressed to Supt. Kohlman that the college officials desire to have a contract in place by the end of the calendar year with a closing date after the school year is complete.

Members approved a bid of $19,206 for network and switches upgrades at the Nemaha Valley Elementary and Nemaha Valley High School. The bid will include hardware that will allow fiber optic connectivity between the two buildings after Rainbow Telecommunications completes the upgrades currently under way.

Approved unanimously was the recommendation from the administrative team to sell old middle/junior high school uniforms for $1.00 each and high school uniforms for $10.00 each. Some of the old uniforms will be retained for practice use.

Matt Rehder, City Administrator , was present to explain the Neighborhood Revitalization Program for the City of Seneca. The Program provides a property tax rebate for residential and commercial property owners who improve property according to the regulations. The school district is required to publish the resolution for two consecutive weeks prior to the hearing which will be at the next regular board meeting.  The board approved the resolution for publication.

Other items approved included: supplemental contract for Jeff Suther as assistant middle school boys basketball coach;  Fran Reitz to the Nemaha Valley High School Site Council; gym use by the Sacred Heart/St. Mary’s CCD programs;  and attendance of Supt. Kohlman at the AASA National Convention in Nashville in February.
