The first pep rally of the 2017-18 school year at Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School was held on Thursday, August 31. At the pep rally, the cheerleaders made their first appearance of 2017 showcasing the cheer routine that they choreographed mainly by themselves. Next, Coach Hiltgen gave a very inspiring speech about the team and their work ethic.  He also talked about the linemen doing the dirty work and how the team couldn't function without them. The football players introduced themselves and stated their positions. The volleyball team followed the football team and Coach Nikki Honeyman and Coach Lisa Holthaus were introduced first. Then the volleyball team was introduced and gave a demonstration on volleyball skills. Taryn Ganstrom showed NCEMS how to serve the ball. After that Ella Larkin and Savannah Engelken demonstrated how to pass the ball. Lilly Schultejans and Taryn Bergman demonstrated the sets.  Mia Schmitz showed how to hit the ball. Dr. Beck introduced the cross country team and explained when and where the first cross country meet would be.

The game portion of the pep rally was next.  The cheerleaders picked all the eighth graders from the football team and all the eighth graders and a few seventh graders from the volleyball team. Coach Honeyman coached the football team and Coach Hiltgen coached the volleyball team in a game. The game was about the football team playing volleyball on their half of the gym with a balloon, and the volleyball team playing football on their half of the gym with a balloon too. The football team won the game by finishing the activity first. The VICTORY cheer took place after the game. All the grades spell out V-I-C-T-O-R-Y and whoever is the loudest wins the thunder stick. The seventh graders won the spirit stick with their enthusiasm and energy during the cheer. At dismissal, the cheerleaders  led cheers while students exited the gym.

Isaac Luger said, "It was so awesome, I had so much fun at the pep rally."

"It was funny how the boys had to take the balloon and play volleyball and the girls had to play football with the balloon, but it was just really funny watching them play the wrong sports," said Hailey Meyer.
