On Tuesday, October 10, the Nemaha Central Elementary School held the Body Venture activity for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. This activity helps young students learn about some different parts of the body. The students got 5 minutes in each of the eleven Body Venture stations. High school students enrolled in Anatomy helped teach the students at the different stations.
"I talked about the stomach and how it can become stretched out if you eat too much food, so we need to listen to what our bodies tell us," said Ashley Larkin, Anatomy student.
Students participated by following the path of food as it enters the body. The tour began when a group of students entered the school lunchroom and became a food, such as a carrot, a strawberry, or a piece of cheese. In the next station, the students walked through a giant ear into the brain. Inside the brain dome, students experienced “brain waves” and learned about brain functions. After studying the brain, the students stepped into the larger-than-life mouth and were “swallowed.” As they were swallowed, they went through the esophagus tunnel and moved into the stomach dome.
From the stomach, the students then traveled through the small intestine where they became nutrients that are “absorbed” into the bloodstream. As nutrients, they followed the path a nutrient would take to the heart, lungs, bones, muscles, and skin through different stations. Students left the body through a cut in the skin and proceeded through Power Panther’s Pathway to Life. The final step recapped main health concepts from each of the ten stations.
"It was a fun experience. My favorite part of the body was the lungs," said Gabby Chapa.
