On Friday, October 20, the first through fifth grade students at the Nemaha Central Elementary School shopped at the Accelerated Reader (AR) store. The classes one at a time entered the library near the front entrance to go buy items such as sleds, candy, gatorade, K-State items, KU items, and even more!
The students were able to buy anything they wanted at the store by how many points they had. Students received points for reading AR books and taking an AR test on the computer over the book. On each AR book, there are a certain amount of points you can get and most of the time the bigger the book the more points you will get. The more points you have going into the AR store the bigger the items you could purchase.
The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) set up the AR store for the students. They set up tables, moved chairs, and bought all of the items. The PTO made sure the students got all of the points on a little piece of paper. Volunteers from the PTO were at the school all day working while the students were able to shop and have fun.
“My favorite part of the A.R. store was when I got a giant sled!” said Jade Macke.
Ella Beyer said, “I liked to shop and look through all of the toys!”
The AR store is over when you get into 6th grade, so you need to enjoy it while you can. Every nine weeks the AR store happens, so make sure you are reading and you’re ready to go by the time it comes rolling in again!
Thank you PTO for making this a great experience for the students at NCES!
