NCMS Boys Basketball Team Rolls Past Troy

    At Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School on Thursday, November 30, the Nemaha Central Thunder boys basketball team played the Troy Trojans.

    For the B-team, the game started off with Mo Hilbert tipping off. The Thunder team had a slow start and found themselves down 2-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Thunder team started to get the momentum and they found themselves down by one point, 9-10 by the end of the second quarter. At halftime, the Thunder team went into the locker room to discuss what was going right and wrong and to go over plays for the next half. In the second half, the starters resumed the court fired up to win the game. Good defense and working together as a team was the focus of the third quarter. It worked as the Thunder team scored 16 points to Troy’s 1 point to take a 25-11 lead. The fourth quarter came and the Thunder team was ready to win the game. The Trojans had possession of the ball at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Thunder team played hard and with a great defensive performance, they were able to hold Troy to only two points in the fourth quarter. The final score was 32 to 13. With the win, the boys B-team is now 2-0 on the season.

    Isaac Lueger said, “In the first half we were not playing well, but then after halftime, we came out and played great.”

    The C-team played a one quarter game after the B-team game. Preston Koch was tipping off for the Thunder team and the quarter began. In the first two minutes there was no scoring and then in the third minute of the game, NC scored four points to make the score 4-0 with a Thunder lead. Then with about two minutes left in the quarter, Troy made two baskets back to back to even out the score. In the last minute and a half, it became a battle to see who would come out on top however, no one scored and the game ended with a 4-4 tie. The boys C-team played better in this game, but they are still looking for their first win of the season.    

    Jack Holthaus said, “The game was tough, but I think we played well.”

    The last game of the night was the A-team game. In the A-team game, Marcus Beck tipped off for the Thunder and Troy won the tip. In the first quarter, the Thunder team exploded with offense and took a 16-3 lead. Troy started a comeback in the second quarter and they cut the Thunder lead to 8 points. The halftime score was 23-15 with the Thunder leading the game.

    After halftime, NC came out on fire and scored twelve points. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 35-20 in favor of the Thunder team. In the fourth quarter, the defense for both teams stepped up and only a few points were added to the score. The final score was 37 to 24.  The boys A-team is undefeated on the season picking up their second win.     

    Messiayah Nolte said, “Our press was shutting them down and they couldn’t get a shot off before we stole the ball or it went out of bounds.”

    In all, the Thunder boys basketball teams played great. The Thunder ended up with two wins and a tie for the night. The Thunder basketball team will have a few more games before Christmas break to improve their skills.
