The Nemaha Central Thunder boys basketball team traveled to Onaga on Monday, December 18 to play the Buffalos.

The night kicked off with the boys B-team. Mo Hilbert was the one to tip off for the Thunder. The Thunder team got on the board in the first quarter, but the Buffalos were hanging right there with them. At the end of the quarter, the Thunder boys had a 9-6 lead. The Thunder team didn’t increase their score much in the second quarter, but neither did the Buffalos. The second quarter ended with the Thunder boys leading 12-8. At halftime the Thunder team talked about how they were going to play better defense and how they were going to run the offense. When the Thunder boys returned to the floor they were ready to play some basketball. During the third quarter,  the Thunder offense exploded scoring 11 points, while defensively, they held the Buffalos to only 2 points. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 23-10 with the Thunder in control of the game. During the fourth quarter, the Thunder offense continued to work as they outscored the Buffalos 13-4. The Thunder team ended the game with another victory with the final score of 36-14. With this win, the Thunder B-team is now sitting at a 4-2 record.

Kace Kramer said, ”I did not think it was a challenge, but I think that we could have done a little bit better than what we did because we had a lot of turnovers and bad passes. Overall I think we did pretty good.”

The next game was the boys A-team. Marcus Beck won the tip off for the Thunder. The Thunder had an amazing first quarter putting 10 points on the board offensively and holding the Buffalos to only 2 points. The second quarter was about the same as the first quarter offensively as the Thunder team stretched their score to 24 and defensively held the Buffalos to only one basket. The Thunder team took a 24-4 lead going into the locker room feeling good about the rest of the game. The Thunder team talked about the offense they were going to run and what defense they were going to work on in the second half. The NC boys came back to the floor ready to have some more fun playing basketball. The third quarter was another big quarter for the Thunder team as they pushed their score to 35 points, while only allowing the Buffalos to hit 9 points. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder team slowed down as substitutions were being made to allow others some playing time. The Thunder went on to win the game 37-15. With this win, the Thunder A-team remains undefeated with a 5-0 record going into Christmas Break.

“I thought we played really well. We got things done on defense and executed our plays on offense,” said Kaleb Reitz.

The last game of the night was the boys C-team and they played a two quarter game. The first quarter was a very fast moving quarter with both teams scoring about the same, however, the Buffalos took a one-point lead, 6-5. In the second quarter, the Thunder offense was halted as they could not score another basket. The Buffalos went on to double their score. The final score for the two quarter game was 12-5 with a Buffalo win. The C-Team has gotten better since the beginning of the season and they hope to win when they face their next opponent.

Will Heinen said, “I knew we had the strength to beat them, we just didn’t give it our all.”
