On Thursday, January 18, the Thunder girls basketball team played the Doniphan West Mustangs in a game that was highly anticipated.  Both teams had good records going into the game and everyone had been preparing for a tough battle.

That night, the B-team girls were the first to play. The Thunder girls were all very excited to get out there, get going, and hopefully get another win. The first quarter went fairly well, but the Mustangs were playing a tight defense. Although NC did their best to keep their defense up, their offense was very slow. The Thunder did not use all their opportunities to setup and run a play, and it made the game very challenging for them. The Thunder team worked really hard to keep the Mustangs from scoring. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 4-4.

In the second quarter, the girls came back ready to fix the things that did not go well earlier. They kept fighting hard, but their offense still didn’t pick up. Without running their plays smoothly, the tie did not last. The Thunder defense seemed to slip a bit too and the Mustangs just kept scoring. Going into halftime, D-West led the game 15-6.

The third quarter only got tougher for NC. They kept trying to run their plays, but things were not falling into place. Their offense remained slow, holding their score down. Defense from D-West remained aggressive and it was hard for the Thunder to get anything going. By the end of the third quarter, NC had not scored and the Mustangs took charge 24-6.

The Thunder girls picked up their defense in the fourth quarter, but all their hard work was not enough. Their offense remained a little slow, but they were able to score a few baskets. The girls never gave up fighting, but they couldn’t catch back up with the D-West lead. When the game ended, the Thunder team had lost 29-11.

Lacie Young said, "Going into the game we were nervous and I don't think we played to our full potential that night, but it was a good learning experience for all of us."

The A-team girls came out ready to play, and ready to get another win. The NC girls were just as excited for the game against the Lady Mustangs as the B-team was. In the first quarter, the Thunder girls started out with a tight defense to ensure that D-West could not get ahead of them. NC’s offense looked great that night and their teamwork was right on. Time after time they looked for the assist to the post players and the Mustangs just couldn’t keep up. The Mustangs played very aggressive, but the Thunder’s offense stayed strong. When the first quarter ended, the score was 8-3.

In the second quarter, NC’s defense slipped a little, but their offense was still great. Their teamwork didn’t budge the entire night and they continued to make several assists and run their plays smoothly. D-West continued to play aggressively, and overall NC kept up and played tough. Going into halftime, the Thunder team still held the lead, 17-10.

The third quarter went just as well as the first half. NC’s offense stayed hot, and D-West’s defense was unable to keep up. The Thunder’s defense was strong in the third quarter and it was a great battle between the two teams. No matter how hard the Mustangs fought, the Thunder team fought harder, to keep their lead. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 28-18.

The Thunder girls were very excited going into the fourth quarter. They had played tough and made a hard game look easy. The teamwork had remained great for NC, and they maintained their lead throughout the entire fourth quarter. Towards the end of the game, D-West started fouling to try and catch up. The NC girls stayed strong and made their shots to stay on top. The final score for the great match-up was 40-31. The Thunder team had added another important win to their record.

Addy Holthaus said, "It was a fun game. We worked really hard and I'm very proud of how our team played."
