The Nemaha Central boys basketball team traveled to Highland on Thursday, January 18 to take on the Doniphan West Mustangs. The B-team boys went on the court after the B-team girls match-up.  The NC team was on fire in the first quarter scoring 22 points and holding the Mustangs to 0.  What a great offensive and defensive quarter for the Thunder team! In the second quarter, the Thunder boys let up on pressuring the Mustangs and allowed the Mustangs to score.  The NC boys were able to add a few buckets to their score and took a 28-3 lead into the halftime break.

With such a great first half and the fact that there was no C-team game, the Thunder bench played much of the second half.  The boys played hard and learned a lot as the Mustangs were trying hard to catch up.  Even though the NC team only added a few baskets in the second half, they still had a lot of fun working on their skills.  The Mustangs had a great offensive half adding 17 points to their score.  However, with such a big lead in the first quarter, the Thunder team was able to get the victory 32-20.

“It was fun and everyone got to play a lot,” said Brandon Rogers.

The A-team boys also picked up a win against Doniphan West.  In the A-team match-up, the NC team started off strong taking a commanding lead 16-2 in the first quarter.  The Beck twins had an awesome quarter racking up 14 of the 16 points for the Thunder team.  The next quarter was also a great quarter for the Thunder team as they had increased their lead by a few points, 23-7.  The Thunder boys headed to the locker room for a halftime break.  The NC team came back onto the court in the third quarter and their offense exploded again, scoring 13 points, and only allowing D-West to score 4 points of their own.  The NC team had built up quite a lead, 36-6.  In the final quarter, both teams score 5 points each.  After a physical game, the NC team emerged triumphant in the game with a final score of 41-16.

Jacob Heinen said, “The game was fun and I think we all had a blast.”
