The Seneca community firefighters came to visit the Nemaha Central Elementary School on Tuesday, October 9. Grades preschool through fifth grade were divided into several classrooms and one group in the gym for smaller presentations. Usually, the school has a fire drill before they split into the groups but due to the weather, they did not have one.

Several firefighters were visiting with the students in the smaller groups.  Some of the student groups were able to see the firefighters in their gear. The gear they wore were fire-proof coats, pants, and a hard hat. The firefighters gave students some tips on how to stay safe in a situation involving fires. Students received a bag of items including crayons, a color book, a frisbee, and a ruler.

The classes of students in the gym were able to go through the safety house. The safety house is an inflatable house that tests your skills on what to do in a fire situation. After the students went through the safety house, the students had the opportunity to ask the firefighters questions. The students at NC had a great time visiting with the firefighters and asking them questions.

"I learned a lot from the firefighters. One of the things I learned was not to grab a door handle when there is a fire. You should feel it with the back of your hand and check if it’s hot,” said Gabe Davis.

“It was fun, the one thing I liked the most was the safety house,” said Brooklyn Korber.
