Several students from fifth through eighth grade from Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School and St. Peter and Paul School participated in the Winter Band Concert at the high school gymnasium on Monday, December 17.   The concert started at 6:30 P.M. under the direction of Todd Krause and it started with the 5th-grade band.

The 5th-grade band consists of 31 members playing several different instruments.  Fifth grade started off playing “Hot Cross Buns,” then “Lightly Row,” “A Mozart Melody,” and finally “Jingle Bells.”  New this year was a performance by six 5th-grade guitarists. They entertained the audience by playing “Ode to Joy” and “Au Clair De La Lune.”

“It was fun playing the guitar in front of a crowd,” said Jack Macke.

Next, it was the 6th-grade’s turn.  The 6th-grade band consists of 32 members and they started with the song “Up on the Housetop,” then “Jolly Old St. Nick,” and finally the  “Banana Boat Song.”

It was finally the 7th and 8th grade’s turn and they combined classes and played together.  Their group had 27 members and they played two songs, “Carol of the Drum” and “A Carol Countdown.”

Once all the band groups were finished, the Steel Thunder performed.  There are 10 members in this group and they played steel drums under the direction of Chelsey Haverkamp.  The songs they played were: “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain.”

Jillian Stueve said, “It was the best that we have ever played!”

The Winter Band Concert was a fun time for all the students and for the parents watching them.  When it was all over some parents took pictures of their children. The band groups and Steel Drum members hope that everyone has a great holiday season!
