The Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), held the annual Thunder Bash on Friday, February 22. The Thunder Bash is an event held every year, where the eighth graders play the staff at NCEMS. For the event the eighth-graders had the chance to play, coach, cheer, or be in the pep club. This left the sixth and seventh graders to be in the pep club, cheer, keep score, or ref. During the event, the sixth graders were also able to provide a concessions stand. The concessions had various baked goods and water. The money raised from the concession stand went to Babies Best Start at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital. In total, the sixth graders raised over 100 dollars!

In order for the students to participate in the bash, they each had to bring a two-liter bottle of pop. At the bash, the pop was used for the free throw contests. Between each quarter, students had the chance to come down to the court and shoot free throws for a dollar. If the free throw was made, the student was awarded a pop.

This year the staff team consisted of 11 teachers throughout the school. The staff members were: Mr. Cory Bass, Mrs. Angie Bass, Mrs. Carissa Williams, Mrs. Heidi Holthaus, Mrs. Lisa Holthaus, Mrs. Jessica Koch, Mrs. Nikki Honeyman, Mrs. Betty Peterson, Mr. Hadden Hiltgen, Mr. Mitchell Baumgartner, and Mr. Terry Stueve. The team of staff members went up against three coaches and 21 players.

This year the game was played a little differently. In the first quarter, it was the modern-day rules of basketball. The second quarter went back to the original rules of basketball, with three defensive players on one side of half court, and three offensive players on the other side.

During the third quarter, the teams were keeping it cool by playing with sunglasses on.  At the end of the third quarter, there was a chance for each team to raise their score. Each team was able to go into the bleachers and collect money. After the money was collected and counted it was added to the final score of the team. Then the last quarter went back to the modern day rules.  Because of the collected money, it was a very high scoring game. The final score ended with the students taking a 70 point victory from the teachers, 150-80.

“The Thunder Bash was so much fun, and I’m glad I had the chance to play!” said Emilie Strahm.

Mr. Mitchell Baumgartner commented, “I found out that I can’t dunk.”

NCEMS would also like to thank all the refs, scorekeepers, and the crowd who came out to support the PTO!
