Physical education teacher, Cory Bass has been hosting the Nemaha Central Elementary’s Family Fun Night for over ten plus years. He hosted this year’s event on Thursday, March 21 at the NCEMS gym. Family fun night allows grades kindergarten through fifth grade to bring their parents to school for some family physical fun.

At the beginning of the evening, kindergarten through second grade attended with their parents and warmed up by following an exercise card. Each card has a list of numbers on it. There are small posters on the walls that have one of the numbers and an exercise on it. You follow the exercise it says eventually you’re all stretched and warmed up.

One of the games the students and parents partook in was bean bag tag. Each person is given a bean bag and when Mr. Bass yells go, they will all start sliding them across the floor. If you are hit by a bean bag, you have to sit down and you can only get back up if you manage to hit someone else.

Another activity all the kids enjoy doing is parachutes. They love getting to make a giant mushroom with the parachute and sit under it. Sharks and Lifeguards is another favorite game of the students. Everyone will put their feet under the parachute and one person will be under the parachute. They are the shark and they have to pull people under. There will be one lifeguard and they have to try and save the people from being pulled under by the shark.

“It was fun, I enjoyed it,” said Korbin Schmelzle.

After the younger students left, it was time for grades 3-5 and their parents to come in for some family physical fun. The parents and students warmed up by doing exercise cards as well. This group of students played jailhouse dodgeball. In this game, a few people from each team will be given a dodgeball. You try to hit the opposite team players and if you are hit you go to jail. Your teammates can get you out of jail by throwing the ball from their side to the jail. If you catch it, you can go back in and play.

“My favorite part was when we played dodgeball against the parents,” said Parker Bergman.

All in all, this family fun night was a success and there will definitely be future ones.
